Responsibilities
R&D
- Design experiments to test and characterise performance of adsorbent materials in various water/wastewater scenarios at bench scale, using both batch and rapid small-scale column test methods;
- Run semi-pilot scale experiments with in-house pilot rig, ensuring all crucial engineering parameters required for scale up are accounted for and monitored appropriately and accurately;
Engineering Projects
- Develop testing protocols for scaling up lab verified solutions, through piloting to full scale solutions at client’s sites;
- Interpreting and understanding client requirements from client engagements and supplied documents (drawings, specifications, correspondence etc);
- Optioneering of end-to-end treatment processes to ensure the recommendation and implementation of most reliable, sustainable and cost-effective systems depending on scenario;
- Produce process flow diagrams, P&IDs and detailed process specifications (including control philosophies) both for pilots and full-scale end-to-end systems;
- Commission and operate pilot plants at clients’ sites, ensuring protocols are conducted according to the agreed schedules and budget;
- Analyse pilot results, compile succinct technical reports, presentations and provide recommendations for full scale implementation, including design risk assessments;
- Supervise/support commissioning of full-scale systems;
- Mentor junior engineers and junior technicians;
Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience
- Completed Ph.D in chemical engineering, environmental engineering or environmental science. Chartered membership of a relevant professional institution would be considered an advantage but not essential;
- Demonstrable experience as a process engineer, at least some of which is focused on industrial water/wastewater treatment;
- In-depth knowledge of water and wastewater treatment technologies, and of selection and design processes;
- Well-developed understanding of technology R&D stages and scale-up engineering methodologies, from bench scale feasibility studies through to pilot plant and full-scale systems;
- Experience in conducting treatment facility surveys and providing recommendations;
- Experience in designing, commissioning and operating pilot plants, troubleshooting, analysing data, compiling reports and presenting results internally and externally;
- Proven ability of working with clients, preferably with tier 1 global companies;
- Able to work comfortably in a challenging, fast-paced environment and deliver results on time, within budget and to a high standard. Previous exposure to a start-up climate, particularly in commercialisation stage will be considered an advantage;
- Excellent knowledge of MS Office suite, engineering design/P&ID software (e.g. Visio), mass balance software and hydraulic modelling software
- Flexible and able to travel across the UK and overseas, as work demands.
